2020 Italian GP, Gasly takes home P1

This past weekend’s Italian grand prix was full of drama from start to finish. From Valtteri Bottas’ terrible start to Charles leclerc’s horrific crash at the exit of Parabolica and Lewis Hamilton’s ten second penalty, but the breakout star from the past weekend was clearly Pierre Gasly who after playing the red flag that came after the crash that retired the second Ferrari car to perfection managed to take home P1, becoming the first French driver to win a Gran Prix since 1996.

The 24 year old Frenchman has been having a fantastic season in the Alpha Tauri car leading many people to ask questions of whether Red Bull pulled the trigger too soon on the young driver, at the weekend he bolstered those arguments by securing his first career win at his teams home Grand Prix. Whereas Alexander Albon, who took his seat at red bull midway through last year only managed a P15 which adds to a pretty disappointing season for the driver.

Gasly has amassed a large following from his featuring in the Netflix series Formula 1, Drive to survive. Where he detailed his strong relationship with late F2 driver Anthoine Hubert who passed away after an accident at the 2019 F2 race at Spa Francorchamps. Pierre revealed how Anthoine was the one of the first people to message him after he was dropped from his Red Bull seat the same weekend.

It is fair to say that Pierre Gasly has had a tough run during his time in Formula one, which probably made stepping up to the top step of the podium so much sweeter. Next week is the closing of this third triple header of races at the Mugello circuit in Tuscany. It is likely to be a more normal race, but after this week you never know what will happen on race day.
